Fall Statistics

·       One out of three older adults (age 65 or older) falls each year, but less than half talk to their healthcare provider about it.

·       Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries.

·       In 2015, SD ranked 3rd in the nation for fall-related deaths, with over HALF of those deaths occurring at home.

·       Nationwide, every 11 seconds an older adult is treated in the ER for a fall.

·       Every 19 minutes an older adult dies due to a fall.

 

What are the common risk factors for falls?

·       Lower body weakness                      

·       Poor vision                                   

·       Advanced Age

·       Fear of falling

·       Gait and balance problems              

·       Problems with feet and/or shoes  

·       Dizziness when changing position    

·       Medications                                  

·       Home Hazards

How can older adults prevent falls?

·       Exercise regularly.  It is important that your exercise focuses on increasing leg strength and improving balance

·       Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review your current medications-both prescription and over-the-counter.  They may cause side effects or taking them to together may cause side effects such as dizziness or drowsiness.

·       Have your vision checked by an eye doctor at least once a year.

·       Make sure your home is safe by reducing tripping hazards (rugs, cords), adding grab bars inside and outside the tub/shower/toilet, add railings to both sides of stairways, and improving lighting.
