Home Safety Assessments

Prior to discharging back to your home environment, a Goodcare occupational therapist may complete a home safety assessment to ensure your transition home is adequate and safe.

A Simple Checklist:

-          Do you have throw rugs on the floor?

-          Are there books, towels, shoes, magazines, boxes, blankets or other objects on the floor?

-          Do you have to walk over or around wires or cords (like lamp, telephone, or extension cords)?

-          Is the light near your bed hard to reach?

-          Is the path from your bed to the bathroom dark?

-          Is there enough room to get to the dresser or closet?

-          Do you have wheels on your dining room chairs?

-          Do you use a step stool in the kitchen?

-          Are chairs at a proper height with arm rests?

-          Is your bed too high?

-          Do you need some support when you get in and out of the tub or up from the toilet? Towel racks are not secure to hold onto and do not count.

-          Can your walker be safely used throughout the entire apartment?

-          Can you reach the microwave?

-          Can you reach all light switches?

-          Can you reach the thermostat?

Home assessments are a great way for a therapist to give recommendations on how to keep your area clutter-free and well lit to prevent falls.
